We closed our GoFundMe campaign on December 5, 2014. At the close of business we had raised $1,010 in total. Thank you so much to everyone who contributed to the cause, it means so much! We still have a little over $1,000 to raise before we are completely free and clear on the boat, but the GoFundMe as well as the contributions raised at the paddle challenge and the Eugene Marathon Water Station have put us in good shape as we head into 2015.
Next year promises to bring excitement and challenges as we prepare to launch our boat on to Dexter Lake for the first time, and begin paddler recruitment in earnest. Stay tuned for our annual report and 2015 preview which we will publish at the beginning of January. There are some exciting things on the horizon for the Emerald City Dragon Boat Club. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of the magic!
We received good news today! The IRS has officially declared us a 501c3 nonprofit! This means anyone who has donated equipment or cash to or club during 2014 can claim those donations on their 2014 tax return! We hope this will encourage more people to give to our GoFundMe campaign and help support dragon boating for all in Lane County! Thanks so much!!
Two weeks ago, Emerald City Purchased its first club boat. It’s a fixer-upper, but the hull is in great shape. It’s going to cost us about $3,000 to fully sand and paint the hull, and replace the benches and till. In the next week we will be launching our first stage Go Fund Me campaign. This $1,500 campaign will pay for the hull work that needs to be done. Then, in August we will launch our second-phase Go Fund Me, also for $1,500 and this will be aimed at installing the benches and buying a new till. We hope to be able to launch the boat before next spring. Money of course is the best way to support this effort, but we will most likely have a few work parties in Lake Oswego to help with the refurbishment.
We have a place to park our boat and run our program! Thank you to Lane County! Once we acquire a boat, we will have a safe place to keep it. This is the perfect location for dragon boating. It’s beautiful, calm, big and we will be able to paddle year round out there.
Now the real challenge begins. We need $6,000 to $10,000 to purchase a fully outfitted boat out right. Why the price discrepancy? We are currently trying to locate a used dragon boat to purchase, rather than buying a fully loaded brand new boat right out of the gate. Boats are not cheap, but sometimes used dragon boats do come onto the market when established clubs upgrade their equipment. Our hope is to find a boat, paddles and vests being off-loaded by another club, so we aren’t having to raise 10k at the outset, or worse start the club in debt. Debt is never a good option for a fledgling program.
So what does this mean for you, the person kind enough to read this? We need support. We need monetary support, but also manpower. We need people willing to pound the pavement, sell raffle tickets, ask sponsors to sign on. We need people to organize fundraisers. We need grant writers. Our board has done a lot of work to get us started, but there are only six of us. We are starting to get attention already, and we have already had offers from local people to help with this capital campaign, because that’s what it is. We need capital to establish this club. Not an insurmountable amount of capital, but we need capital. If you see photos of this sport and are itching to get on the water, join the team. The more people we have out there advocating and networking for us, the sooner you will get to take your first dragon ride. It will be worth it, trust us!
If you are interested in joining our capital campaign fill out our contact form. If you have even $5 to donate, click on the Paypal link to the right and send it our way. Every little bit helps! Thank you in advance!
In order to have a club, we need to have a boat. Dock and pool practices just aren’t as fun as being on the water together. So, we need to raise some money. In the next few months, this section of the website will be filled with updates, thank yous and coming events. If you want to be involved in establishing this club from the ground up, contact us through the web form on the contact us page. We can do this, but we need the community’s help! If you are ready to donate, feel free to do so through our Paypal account.
